Rolling on the floor laughing my ass off

19 August 2009 852 views 7 Comments

How many times have you written LOL, LMAO, ROFL, Haha, WOW!, or even Awwww in the last 24 hours?

How many times have you meant exactly what you’d written?

How many times have you really rolled on the floor while laughing when you said ‘ROFL’? Did you really laugh out loud when the word ‘LOL’ slipped out on your keyboard?

Probably ZERO to all the above questions.

This is the face of the serial internet surfer or the Social Media Addict.

And these are the faces corresponding to the various expressions we use frequently on the internet:

What’s yours like?

xD Those are some good observations…most of us keep a straight face when browsing though Twitter. I sometimes snicker or giggle if I find something amusing.. But thats abut it ;)

You could probably get a PhD with that kind of question @daphnemaia;-)

Personally, I hope I am not stupid enough to laugh or wink at my LCD itself. It is just an inanimate object after all and can’t tell the diff (I’m told).

But mediated conversations are an interesting thing. Makes you appreciate just how much we use non-verbals in informal communication. An “Eh?” with a raised eyebrow could be critical, but if I also smile/grimace in various degrees it could be ironic, LMAO or ROFL.

If anything, I think we should be celebrating the fact that humans have managed to find ways of effectively communicating using only screens, kbds and ASCII/unicode character sets. Pretty amazing when you think about it.

And now we manage to do it quite successfully … in under 140 chars. That’s a WOW! ;-)

Brilliant post. I rarely do more than smile, or maybe snicker a bit when I see something funny. There have only been a few times where I’ve laughed like a retarded hyena while my wife looks at me like she’s wondering if she made a mistake. Usually, I laugh the most over comments people make, rather than the actual content.

On the other hand… the customers here at Starbucks in Los Gatos often look at me weird when I laugh out loud for real.
